My creative side
‘Don’t hide your light under a bush!’ my teacher told me in college. It wasn’t the first time I heard this in my ears. Even since I finally got to grips with singing, I’ve been nervous to open my mouth to do so. I ascended to heights when I was part of a charismatic church’s worship team. I got to play electric guitar a lot while there, but only got into doing singing and guitar until the very end. Once I found stuff I disagreed with and I opened my mouth, I got into trouble for it.
I’ve studied music at university. Learnt to use my instrument(s) and performed a lot in my 20s before my mental health took a nosedive, but its one of my life’s constants. I did have dreams of performing on ‘Top Of The Pops’ when I was a young kid. However, once life took over it got prodded, poked and generally told it wasn’t going to work or never make any money. So I got myself 9–5 job, after 9–5 job and so on and so on until the aforementioned nosedive. I still clung on to music though, I’m probably listening to something while I write this blog.
The biggest thing I learnt while in the depths of depression and seemingly trapped is something I picked up from therapy:
You are more than what you do. You’re more than just a creative, more than just an activist, more than just a self awareness coach. You are you.
Its so easy to get trapped into the roles we either choose or are chosen for us. Rather that we are many things to different people. I know there’s internal and external forces trying to move everyone consciously and unconsciously, but its learning that self awareness to know where to go and what to do that changes things. Its also where having the experience of a creative life bleeds into my other disciplines, or maybe even feeds the other disciplines.
My main point however a big digression is that I’ll be having a busy October and November doing creative things. One being taking part in Shout Festival in Birmingham, UK as part of the newly formed House of Bab for the Shout Vogue Ball on 15th November at 8pm. I’ll be doing something performance related, so if you’re interested…get yourself a ticket and see me do something new! Also, a heads up for new music I’m recording and releasing before the end of 2019. Keep an eye on all my other social media for that.
Until next time, #embraceinfinity and KEEP CREATING!
