Spider-Man: The Young Everyman

I’ll make it very clear: Spider-Man is my favourite character among Marvel characters. Largely because he has very identifiable issues despite having amazing powers, intellect and skill. I’m also a huge fan of Tom Holland’s version because this is very early in his history. He’s only just a year or two removed from discovering his powers, he’s still in higher education and has more to lose compared to either Tobey Maguire’s or Andrew Garfield’s version. Incoming spoilers for Spider-Man Homecoming and Spider-Man Far From Home.

I got into Spider-Man through an ongoing animated series in the early to mid 90s. This version of Peter Parker was a lot older, juggling work life, personal life and his duties as Spider-Man. However the most recent version captured me because of the idea of a teen grappling with high school, hanging with friends, brand new love interests and newly found powers was more compelling. Especially since Tony Stark essentially plucked him out of relative obscurity for his own means in Civil War to finding his own way to be a ‘friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man’ in Homecoming and growing more capable after dealing with Vulture’s criminal activities in New York.

What inspires me was how he dealt with life after ‘The Blip’ and being thrown out of time by five years, losing Tony Stark as his mentor and facing more difficult adversaries and mistakes on the way. Let alone what happens after Far From Home and the repercussions that will effect his life forever. I personally would really giving him a space in coaching to vent about everything. About Tony, about Aunt May, about Happy, about MJ, about his friends…everything. Also in my own coaching, this would be less about advice and more about guiding Peter through his own goals and intentions while helping him focus his abilities also (through meditation)

In conclusion: the reason why I consider Spider-Man my favourite is because they feel like it could be anybody. It’s the possibilities of imagination, innovation and serendipity coming together and with hard work…even you can be a superhero.

Until next time, #embraceinfinity and EXCELSIOR!
